The beginning of a New Year also brings new resolve to make positive changes in our lives.  Many of us set off with great intent to finally make the change we have promised ourselves every year for the past few years. So what can you do to make this the year of positive change for you?  Here are some tips for making really good goals and help making 2017 your best year ever.

  1. Know what you want. We are often very good at saying what we don’t want.  Saying what we do want makes it much more specific and easier for us imagine.  Saying it positively can make it stick. So you might say “By June 2017 I breathe easier and walk faster.”  Rather than “I don’t want to smoke.”
  2. Be specific and realistic about what you want to achieve. Being realistic helps to make your goal achievable.  If we set ourselves a goal that is unrealistic we are less likely to achieve it as we find it hard to identify the steps to take to get there. Take small steps rather than one big leap.
  3. Know how you are making progress toward your goal. There are lots of ways to measure change.  When we keep a record of small achievements they add up to the big achievements and changes we make.  We often forget the steps we have taken to be where we are today.  If you are looking to be fitter and healthier, think beyond scales and tape measures, to photographs, your moods and better sleep as signs you are achieving your goals.
  4. Your goals, are your goals. If it matters to you, it matters.  Have people around you who encourage you and celebrate your success with you.
  5. Focus on what you can do. Small changes make a big impact.  You may find that taking a ten minute break from you desk and stepping outside can help lower your stress levels.  Having a short and focused to-do list is less demanding than a long never ending list of things to-do.  When you tick something off your list have a little celebration!  This can help you keep your resolve and make the changes you want.
  6. Change one thing at a time. Focusing on one thing and working towards that is a good way to spend your time and energy. You are much more likely to make a change that sticks the more you practice your new habits.
  7. Know the first step you are going to take. You can take the first step straight away.  Having clear steps helps to keep you focused on where you are going.
  8. Do you have all you need to achieve your goal? Finding people who have already done what you want to achieve or can help you will increase your chances of achieving your goal.
  9. Make a picture of your goal. Finding quotes, words, pictures and making a vision board that inspires you and gives a clear picture of what you want to achieve will spur you on.  Have it in a place you see every day, the fridge, by your bathroom mirror, inside your desk drawer.
  10. Believe in yourself. You have chosen your goal, you want to make the change.  If you think you can, you can!
