What’s the difference between Coaching, Counselling and Therapy?
In terms of definition clients usually come to therapy with a particular issue they want to overcome or a particular problem. Counselling is similar to therapy in that it is usually for overcoming a problem and it is also useful when a safe, confidential, non- judgemental environment is required to discuss issues and understand what’s going on.
Coaching clients may not have a particular pressing issue; they either have an outcome in mind or are just feeling a bit stuck and want to explore this. Some definitions view therapy as exploring the past to inform the present and coaching on exploring the present to inform the future. This is not always the case though it is a helpful way of thinking about it. Coaching is very often in a particular context so a client may want to explore their career or life decisions. Whereas in therapy the focus is on resolving the problem which may exist across many contexts in a persons life. Or it may be about a specific behaviour you want to change, giving up smoking and being a non-smoker, sleeping better or dealing with a time of stress such as exams, getting married, becoming a parent.
Although there is some overlap, coaching, counselling and therapy are different and when we have our initial meeting we will discuss your specific problems and/or goals.
How much do sessions cost?
The charge is £30 per half an hour. An hourly session costs £60 an hour. The first session is usually 90 minutes for which the charge is £90. Payment is by cash or cheque at each session or in advance by direct bank payment.
How long do sessions last?
The first session is usually an hour and a half then we agree between us the best approach from there. Most clients have weekly sessions of an hour. I also run intensive sessions of full or half days if clients prefer, this is popular with corporate clients and clients who travel a distance.
Where and when do you hold appointments?
I book appointments across Dumfries and Galloway at different locations. Appointments are available at weekends and evenings, as many of clients have busy lives and the usual business hours are not convenient to them.
- Synergy Beauty and Holistic, Church Crescent, Dumfries
- Blackburn’s Hair Salon, King Street, Castle Douglas
- The Town Hall, Lockerbie
- Eskdalemuir Community Hub, The Old School, Eskdalemuir
- Solway Physiotherapy, Cummertrees, Annan
I also offer coaching by Skype and telephone. Please contact us to discuss how we can work together.
How many sessions will I need?
It really depends on you and the nature of the work we do together. Once we have decided to work together, we will agree a number of sessions and we review this periodically to make sure we are on track.
In my experience most clients usually have between 6 and 12 sessions. We usually have one or two monthly follow up sessions afterwards which is very useful for reinforcing changes and picking up on any issues.
Coaching is booked in blocks of 6 one and a half hour sessions. Coaching sessions can also be done on the phone or via Skype, although I prefer to meet with clients at least once.
Hypnotherapy sessions will vary depending on the issue we are working together specif outcomes such as wanting to liberate you non-smoking self is 3 sessions with an optional follow-up session.
What if I need to cancel or change a session?
I appreciate that sometimes life happens and providing you give me more than 1 working days notice you will not be charged for the cancelled session. Any cancellations with less than one working days notice will incur the full cost of the session.
We are a company looking for someone to work with our staff on a one to one basis, can you help?
Yes, I have extensive business experience at a senior level. Corporate coaching and development particularly around the impacts of change on an individuals well-being and performance. I have experience of working with employees facing redundancy, relocation and major organisational change. Please contact me to discuss your specific requirements.
So what next?
The next step is to contact me with any questions or to arrange a session. This can either be done on the phone or by e mail. During the first session we will decide whether to go ahead and work together. It’s an opportunity for me to better understand your situation and what you want to achieve and for you to get to know me better and understand the way I work and decide whether that suits you. If we decide to go ahead we will agree a contract between us.
